“Investigations are ongoing, and we are committed to establishing the full circumstances of this tragic incident,” reads the notice.
Initial investigations show that Jirongo’s car, a Mercedes-Benz with registration KCZ 305U, collided with a PSV bus, registration KCU 576A, operated by Climax Company Ltd.
The crash occurred at about 2:19 am, pushing Jirongo’s vehicle roughly 25 metres from the impact point, while the bus came to a stop around 50 metres away.
A team of homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory visited the scene, collected evidence, and reviewed CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station as reported by DCI.
DCI reports that the footage shows that at 2:18:40 am, the former Lugari Member of Parliament drove into the petrol station from the Nakuru direction but did not refuel.
At 2:19:19 am, he made a right turn heading back toward Nairobi, and seconds later, the bus struck his vehicle. The bus driver, Tyrus Kamau Githinji, has been interrogated.
However, the DCI says he is out on cash bail and is required to report to the Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22, 2025, for further action.
Investigators said the driver is being probed under the offence of causing death by dangerous driving.
They confirmed that statements have been taken from the petrol station night guard and fuel attendant, as well as other witnesses, including those present at a meeting Jirongo attended at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi.
Further statements are expected from passengers aboard the PSV bus and additional witnesses. The forensic team is also scheduled to revisit the scene for a more detailed examination.
Once completed, a comprehensive police file will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for review and guidance.
The DCI extended its condolences to the family, friends, and associates of Jirongo, assuring the public of a thorough and impartial inquiry.
“We will ensure that the investigation is credible and conducted in accordance with the Constitution of Kenya and the rule of law,” reads the notice.
Jirongo will be laid to rest at his Lumakanda home on Tuesday, December 30, as his family announced. The burial arrangements were confirmed on Sunday by a funeral committee chaired by former MP Fred Gumo, which addressed the media following a consultative meeting.
Speaking on behalf of the committee, Senator Khaniri said the late Jirongo will be buried at his family homestead in Lumakanda, next to his parents.
