State offers psychological support to KU students following fatal crash

Mwaura affirmed that the state, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, is working closely with university officials to ensure that all necessary support is extended to the affected students.
Following Monday's tragic road accident near the Maungu area in Taita Taveta, which claimed the lives of 11 Kenyatta University students, the government has initiated a comprehensive effort to provide psychosocial care and counseling services for the students.
Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura affirmed that the state, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, is working closely with university officials to ensure that all necessary support is extended to the affected students.

"Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of the young and promising citizens we have lost, and we fervently pray for the speedy recovery of those injured," he said.
Additionally, Mwaura disclosed that the university has set up a dedicated help desk at the Business Student Services Centre, room 151, to cater to inquiries from concerned parents and the public.
Regarding the accident, Mwaura revealed that two university buses were en route to the Coast for an academic excursion. While one bus arrived safely, the other was involved in a collision with a truck around 6 pm.
In light of the tragedy, the planned trip has been cancelled, and students who had already commenced the excursion have been recalled to the institution in solidarity with their affected peers.
Providing updates on the injured, Mwaura announced that 24 students are receiving medical care.
"Eight students in critical condition have been airlifted to Nairobi, facilitated by AMREF Flying Doctors, who generously provided three planes for medical evacuation," he said.
Mwaura emphasized the importance of road safety vigilance among all road users to prevent further accidents. He assured that ongoing updates will be disseminated as they unfold, while reiterating the government's heartfelt condolences to the grieving families.
Furthermore, KU Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics Waceke Wanjohi announced the suspension of all classes for three days, commencing Wednesday, March 20, 2024, to mourn the departed students.
