NTSA issues road safety advisory amid ongoing rains

The heavy rains experienced in most parts of the country create potentially dangerous conditions for road users.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has warned motorists against speeding in the current rains, to avoid causing accidents.
In a statement to newsrooms on Saturday, the authority says the heavy rains experienced in most parts of the country create potentially dangerous conditions for road users.

"With increased rainfall, the Authority cautions road users that after the recent dry weather there is an accumulation of dirt, soil, and oil deposits. We advise motorists to reduce their speed since these deposits lead to the formation of slippery surfaces making stopping more difficult thus raising the possibility of losing control," the statement attributed to Director General George Njao says.
"We urge the public to be extra vigilant, courteous and cognizant of their safety as well as looking out for vulnerable road users including children, pedestrians among others."
He further called on motorists to resist the urge to drive through flash floods, flooded roads, and flood riverbeds.
At the same time, passengers have been asked to take responsibility for their own safety, speak out and stop the driver in the event of impunity.
Cautionary measures
The authority has further urged motorists to take the following cautionary measures; Remove stalled vehicles as soon as possible, keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, and always turn on the headlights to increase visibility.
Always keep both hands on the steering wheel to enable full control, check the tyres and replace them if they are worn out.
Pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists are advised to wear bright clothing or reflector
"Be aware that brakes can be affected by water. After going through water, drive slowly, this helps dry the brakes," the statement adds.
He added that the ongoing crackdown on non-compliant motorists will continue across all major highways.
The advisory comes hours after, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced the closure of the North Horr-Kalacha (B75) Road in Marsabit County due to heavy rains.
KeNHA said the rains experienced in the county caused severe flooding, leading to the impassable condition of the highway.
"We advise motorists to utilise alternative routes until the rains subside to ensure everyone's safety," KeNHA said in a statement.
The authority further said traffic flow would only resume after a comprehensive assessment and possible reinstatement of any damaged sections of the road, as part of the ongoing Routine Maintenance and Spot Improvement Contract recently awarded.
The authority at the same time issued a flooding alert at the Mororo Area on the Nairobi - Garissa Road due to the rising waters at the Tana River Bridge.
"The persisting rainfall portends further water rise which could affect other previously damaged road sections. Motorists are, therefore, urged to exercise caution as they approach Madogo, Konapunda, and Mororo sections of the A3 Road to Garissa," read the statement.
