Francis Ogolla: Four-star General who rose through ranks to head military

Kenya is mourning the tragic loss of General Francis Ogolla, who served as the Chief of Defence Forces until his untimely passing in a helicopter accident on Thursday in Kaben, Marakwet East.

President William Ruto announced a three-day national mourning after confirming the death of the four-star General.

General Ogolla, who assumed the General position in April 2023, succeeded General Robert Kibochi upon his retirement at the age of 62.

Before his appointment as Chief of Defence Forces, General Ogolla held the position of Vice Chief of the Defence Forces.

His military career was marked by dedication and excellence, with a remarkable educational journey that included graduating from prestigious institutions such as École Militaire de Paris and the National Defence College of Kenya.

General Ogolla's academic prowess was evident through his diverse educational background, which included a Diploma in International Studies and Military Science from Egerton University, a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, Armed Conflict and Peace Studies (First Class Honors), and a Master of Arts in International Studies from the University of Nairobi.

Rising through the ranks to the position of Major General, General Ogolla served in various leadership roles within the Kenya Air Force.

His experience and expertise were evident as he held positions such as Commander, Deputy Commander, and Base Commander, showcasing his versatility and dedication to service.

General Ogolla's commitment to international peacekeeping missions was commendable, having served as an Observer and Military Information Officer in the former Yugoslavia.

Additionally, he actively contributed to professional organizations such as the Military Christian Fellowship and the Association of African Air Chiefs, further solidifying his reputation as a respected leader within the military community.

Throughout his tenure as Chief of Defence Forces, General Ogolla emphasized the importance of unity of purpose, advocating for "one force, one mission" to ensure the safety, security, and stability of the nation.

He pledged to work closely with other security agencies to achieve sustainable economic development and prosperity for Kenya.

The passing of General Ogolla has left a void in the nation's leadership and military community. Tributes have poured in from across the country, with leaders and citizens alike mourning the loss of a distinguished patriot and dedicated servant of the nation.
