Charles Kahariri sworn in as new Chief of Kenya Defence Forces

The Head of State addressed the newly sworn military officers with a solemn reminder of the responsibility they now carry.

President William Ruto on Friday witnessed the swearing-in of General Charles Kahariri as the new Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces.

Kahariri takes over the leadership of the Kenya Defence Force from the late Gen Francis Ogolla who died in a chopper crash last month.



Previously, he served as the Vice Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces.

Head of Public Service Felix Koskei conducted the swearing-in ceremony at State House Nairobi.

Speaking during the ceremony, Ruto commended the military officers on their new appointments, assuring them of his full support.

"Congratulations and receive the very best wishes as you assume your responsibilities in the service of our nation," he said.

He emphasised that their mandate is to serve the Republic and the people of Kenya.

" I want to remind you that the mandate and assignment bestowed on you is to serve the Republic and the people of Kenya. It is a solemn responsibility put on your shoulders," Ruto said.

The President stressed the need to use authority with accountability, warning them that their actions would be constantly monitored by the Kenyan people.

"Exercising authority comes with huge responsibility and responsibility comes with accountability," he noted.

Ruto commended the Kenya Defence Forces for their history of professionalism, loyalty, and commitment, urging the new officers to uphold this legacy.

"Live up to that and hold the Kenya Defence Forces in high esteem," he said.

The President reiterated that they solely must serve the people of Kenya, not any particular community, region, or faith.

"Let me repeat for the avoidance of doubt and in line with your oath of office that you will serve the people of Kenya. Your assignment is to the people of Kenya," he emphasised.

Addressing their role as leaders with officers, men, and women under their command, Ruto urged them to be firm but fair.

"Grow the Kenya Defence Forces and make it an institution that provides security and integrity for our nation," he added.

Highlighting the paramount importance of protecting the country and its citizens, President Ruto emphasised their role in safeguarding Kenya's sovereignty.

In addition, he reminded them of their duty to assist other security agencies as required by the Constitution

In promotions made on Thursday, Vice Chief of Defence Forces Charles Muriu Kahariri was Promoted to General and named the Chief of Defence Forces.

Kenya Airforce commander Major General John Omenda was promoted and named the Vice Chief of Defence Forces.

Major General Fatuma Ahmed was sworn in as the Commander of Kenya Airforce to succeed Maj Gen Omenda.

Brig Peter Githinji was promoted to Major General and named senior directing staff at the National Defence College.

Brig George Okumu was promoted to Major General and named the Managing Director of Kenya Ordinance Factories Corporation and Food Processing Factory while Brigadier Samuel Kipkorir was appointed the deputy commander of Kenya Air Force.

Brigadier Paul Otieno, Managing Director for Kenya Shipyards Limited was promoted to Major General and named the commander of Kenya Navy replacing Major General Thomas Ng'ang'a who had served in the position for a month.

Maj Gen Ng'ang'a was moved to the National Defence University and appointed the Vice Chancellor of administration and finance.
