Residents, civil society groups, and leaders gathered in Mombasa to deliberate on the intricacies of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project and its implications. The discussion focused on the SGR's impact on the local economy, infrastructure, and the lives of Mombasa residents, particularly improving the port of Mombasa and the SGR. Civil society organizations actively participated in this discourse.

Businessman Jimi Wanjigi reiterated his unwavering commitment to challenging the SGR's monopolistic grip, tracing his involvement back to as early as 2013. Wanjigi highlighted his sustained efforts in contesting the SGR project, including his refusal to yield to persuasion from former President Uhuru Kenyatta. He asserted his aim for a unified stance moving forward regarding the SGR project.

Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, speaking on behalf of Muslims for Human Rights (Muhuri), underscored the importance of Mombasa's resources, warning that the loss of these assets would jeopardize the county's existence and impede grassroots development. Mutunga proposed legal action as a strategy to safeguard the port, stressing the need for political organisation and mobilisation among the county's people.

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir underlined the symbiotic relationship between the port's operations and the County Government's infrastructure support, highlighting their vital role in fueling the local economy. He advocated for Mombasa to have a stake in the port's affairs. Additionally, Governor Nassir stressed the importance of the Ministry of Transport involving the local community through their elected representatives in decision-making processes related to the port.

Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir stated, "The port's operations and the County Government's infrastructure support play a vital role in fueling the local economy. It is crucial for Mombasa to have a stake in the port's affairs."
