No bullet wounds found on Kware bodies – State pathologist

Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor has disclosed that none of the bodies recovered from the Kware dump site in Mukuru slums showed any signs of injuries attributed to bullets, either externally or upon examination.

This comes as the State concluded post-mortem for the 13 bodies which had been recovered from the site.

"Investigations revealed that all recovered bodies were female, in any injuries, which can be assigned to a bullet from a family or even examination of the bodies," Oduor said on Wednesday while addressing the media at Nairobi Funeral Home.

The chief pathologist also disclosed that most of the bodies have various levels of decomposition, from mild to severe, noting that it would be difficult to assign a cause of death to those severely decomposed.

"For bodies which are severely decomposed, it becomes very difficult to assign a cause of death because there's what is called post-mortem artifacts where so many tissues are lost because of decomposition," Oduor said.

Oduor further reported that one of the bodies exhibited head injuries, while another showed signs of strangulation.

In addition, among the nine body bags recovered, four contained lower limbs amputated from the knees down—two right legs and two left legs.

"There was also the whole body of a female who we examined, and we found that she had a head injury," the pathologist said.

Part of what was recovered at the quarry were three bodies, which were part of human bodies (female), which were from the waist to the knee.

"There was an upper trunk from the waist upward, which we assigned the cause of death as strangulation. So this brings them down to a total of nine," Oduor added.

The bodies were found dismembered at the waist, with Oduor suggesting that this likely occurred post-mortem.

One female body remained intact and showed no signs of decomposition, but examination revealed head injuries.

Another body, consisting only of the upper torso, showed mild decomposition and distinct ligature marks around the neck, indicating the individual had been strangled.

Oduor stated that X-rays of the head and other body parts have been submitted to radiologists for analysis.

Police are still investigating the murder of the women.

Collins Khalusha is the prime suspect in the macabre murder of at least 42 women in the city, and he claims he met all of them on the streets.

The court on Tuesday allowed police to detain Khalusha for 30 days as investigations continued.

He appeared in Makadara court with his lawyer, who had objected to the police's application to detain Khalusha further.

The head of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Mohamed Amin, said on Monday that Khalusha confessed to killing 42 women, including his wife, since 2022.
