Kilifi's Mtwapa Market set for closure to pave way for renovations
Traders at the market lauded Kilifi County for the move but urged to be temporarily relocated for them to be able to conduct their businesses
The Kilifi County Government is set to close the Mtwapa Market, one of the largest in the area.
The Department of Trade, Tourism, and Cooperative Development made the announcement.

It mentioned the reason for the closure is to pave the way for the uplift of the market. The temporary closure has been scheduled for tomorrow, Friday.
“All traders are urged to clear their stock by the stipulated date as we embark on a transformative journey to turn the Mtwapa Market into an exemplary hub. Our primary objectives include improving working conditions, implementing proper storage facilities, and bolstering security measures for our esteemed vendors,” the department states.

“We are okay with the announcement, however, we want to be relocated somewhere we can continue doing our business as we wait for the remodelling,” said Ali Kombo, one of the traders.

Milkaa Nancy, another trader, called for the county government to hasten the process to move back.
“This place has been like my second home, where I come every morning to carry out my daily business. Being a single mother, the family depends on me and the economy of this country has worsened. They need to speed up so we can return to our daily routine,” said Ms Nancy.
Khadija Dzombo said she was not that happy with the announcement, terming it short notice.
Mtwapa which is at the border of Mombasa and Kilifi counties is popular amongst international and local tourists.
Foreigners flooded in, igniting rapid town growth now, a bustling 24/7 epicentre mirroring vibrant businesses and bustling markets.
Mtwapa's current visage contrasts starkly with its former self, showcasing an urban-industrial allure.
The allure draws in numerous banks, shopping centres, and supermarket chains, transforming the area into a magnet for those craving its bustling, round-the-clock lifestyle.
