Vetting committee rejects Gender CS nominee Soi Lang'at, approves 19 others

The National Assembly Committee on Appointments has approved President William Ruto's 19 cabinet nominees.

However, the committee has rejected the nomination of Gender CS nominee Stella Soi Lang'at.

This was communicated to the House by the National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah while tabling the report on the vetting of cabinet nominees on Wednesday.

“Honorable Speaker, I beg to give notice of the following motion that taking into consideration the findings of the committee on appointments in its second report on the vetting of the nominees for appointment to the offices of cabinet secretaries laid on the table of the house today,” he said.

Those approved include Aden Duale (Environment), Kithure Kindiki (Interior), Alice Wahome (Lands), Alfred Mutua ( Labour), Salim Mvurya (Trade), Justin Muturi (Public Service), Soipan Tuya (Defence), Kipchumba Murkomen (Sports), Davis Chirchir (Roads and Transport) and Rebecca Miano (Wildlife and Tourism).

The National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula-led committee also approved Dr Debra Mulongo Barasa (Health), Julius Migosi Ogamba (Education), Andrew Mwihia Karanja (Agriculture and Livestock Development), Eric Muriithi Muuga (Water, Sanitation and Irrigation) and Margaret Nyambura Ndung'u (Information, Communication and Digital Economy).

Others include John Mbadi (National Treasury), Opiyo Wandayi (Energy), Hassan Joho (Mining) and Wycliffe Oparanya (Cooperatives).

The tabling of the report was introduced as a special motion under the National Assembly’s Standing Order No. 61.

The motion to be disposed of by the speaker will seek the resolution of the House to approve an appointment in accordance with Part XI of the approval of public appointments.

The House is expected to now debate on the report and later conduct a vote on each of the nominees to either approve or reject.

Once approved, the names will be forwarded to the president for appointment and later the swearing-in of the nominees.

President Ruto will now be required to submit a new nominee to the Gender docket.
