This is the third time Mwangaza has been impeached and is facing the Senate over her impeachment.

Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has pleaded not guilty to all three charges brought against her by the Meru County Assembly.

Following the reading of the accusations in preparation for her impeachment hearing on Monday morning, Mwangaza firmly maintained her innocence.

"Not guilty," she said.

This is the third time Mwangaza has been impeached and is facing the Senate over her impeachment.

The first-term governor is facing three charges; gross violation of the constitution, gross misconduct and abuse of office.

At the hearing, Mwangaza is being represented by lawyers Elisha Ongoya and Elias Mutuma as lead as well as Bridah Kimathi, Robert Mutembei, Edgar Busienga and Collins Mwenda.

The advocates of the County Assembly will be the first to state their case against Mwangaza on the floor of the Senate.

They include Ndegwa Njiru, Mwangi Ndegwa, Mwirigi Eric Muriuki, Mwereru Boniface Mawira, Linda Nkirote Kithinji, Antony Mwenda and Ngure Benson Kinyua.

In November 2023, the Senate acquitted Governor Mwangaza of all seven charges against her by the Meru County Assembly.

The Senate dismissed all the charges against Mwangaza, giving her a new lease of life in the county leadership.

At the time, she faced charges of misappropriation and misuse of resources, nepotism, bullying, illegal appointments, contempt of court, and naming a road after her husband illegally.

Governor Mwangaza denied all the charges and put up a spirited defence saying she was being victimised as a woman leader.
