Terror suspect sentenced to 20 years in prison by Siaya court

George Oluoch Awiti, also known as Mohamed, was on Thursday convicted on multiple terrorism-related charges by the Siaya Law Court. The case was presided over by Senior Principal Magistrate Lester Simiyu.

Awiti faced serious allegations, including the possession of materials related to terrorism and membership in a terrorist organisation.

These charges are considered significant offences under Kenyan law. After reviewing the evidence and hearing the arguments presented by both the defence and prosecution, the magistrate found Awiti guilty on all charges.

The prosecution, led by Soita Evans China, presented evidence that included testimony from three key witnesses. Additionally, forensic experts analyzed Awiti's mobile phone, SIM card, and compact disk, which were found to contain extremist content. These materials were central to the prosecution's case.

The court was informed that Awiti's possession included audio and video recordings featuring individuals linked to terrorism, some of whom are on the intelligence red list.

Among these individuals were Aboud Rogo, a known extremist, and the late Osama Bin Laden, the former leader of Al Qaeda. The content in Awiti's possession depicted these figures as martyrs.

The prosecution further argued that the materials found with Awiti promoted jihad in Somalia and incited rebellion against the Kenyan government. This was presented as evidence of his involvement in activities that endangered national security.

As a result of his conviction, Awiti was sentenced to ten years in prison for being a member of a terrorist organisation. He received an additional ten-year sentence for collecting information related to terrorism and another ten-year sentence for possessing extremist materials that promoted violence and jihad.

However, the court determined that the sentences for the second and third charges would be served concurrently. This ruling means that Awiti will serve a total of 20 years in prison.
