Masengeli confirmed that investigations into the incident are already underway, with specialised teams from the National Police Service (NPS) deployed to the scene.

Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli has expressed his condolences to the families and victims of the fire tragedy at the Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri County, where 17 pupils lost their lives in a tragic overnight blaze.

Masengeli confirmed that investigations into the incident are already underway, with specialised teams from the National Police Service (NPS) deployed to the scene.

"We are deeply saddened by this tragedy at Hillside Endarasha Academy. A thorough investigation is in progress, and we will provide a full report upon its completion," said Masengeli during a briefing.

The Acting IG was speaking after a consultative meeting with regional and county police commanders at the Kizingo police headquarters. During the meeting, he assured the residents of the Coast region of enhanced security measures, emphasising that the NPS is prepared to address specific challenges affecting the area.

He pointed out that tackling the influx of contraband goods and illicit drugs through the region’s porous borders remains a priority for the police.

"We have intensified operations to regulate the movement of vehicles entering the country to ensure no illegal substances or goods cross our borders," stated Masengeli.

The Acting IG was joined by Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Mohamed Amin and Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Eliud Langat. He also addressed the rise in petty crimes, such as muggings and phone snatching, in Mombasa's Central Business District (CBD).

Masengeli assured the public of swift action to curb these crimes and called on citizens to cooperate with the police by providing any helpful information.

"We have made several arrests related to these petty crimes, and we urge residents to assist us in maintaining safety by reporting suspicious activities," he added.

Masengeli reiterated the police service’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens, with a focus on countering crime and enhancing public trust in law enforcement efforts.
