Several people, including a child and construction workers, have been safely rescued following the collapse of a building in Kahawa West, Nairobi County.

Nairobi County Deputy Governor Njoroge Muchiri who visited the scene, assured the public that all construction workers, who were on the ground floor of the eight-storey structure have been accounted for.

He also reported that a woman and a child present at the site have been found safe.

"All the fundis working on the ground floor, along with a lady and child, have all been accounted for," Muchiri said.

He also confirmed that tenants in nearby buildings, which exhibited signs of structural failure, were also evacuated as a precaution.

The County noted that operations at the collapse site are ongoing, with updates expected as recovery efforts progress.

Kenya Red Cross reported that two people were rescued and taken to Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital.

The building collapsed on Sunday, prompting a rapid response from emergency services and the Kenya Red Cross.

A video circulating online captured the moment the structure crumbled, sending debris tumbling down.

The cause of the collapse is still under investigation as authorities continue to assess the damage and ensure the safety of surrounding structures.

Nairobi County had given the tenants 14 days to vacate the building from October 16, 2024.

The notice stipulated that tenants must cease all further development and occupation of the premises and vacate the building by October 30, 2024.

“Stop further development/occupation forthwith and remove the said development and vacate the building within a period of 14 days. From the date of this notice failing which the Nairobi City County may enter on the said land and execute the requirement as outlined herein above and may recover as a civil debt in any court of competent jurisdiction any related expense. This notice shall take effect on October 30, 2024,” reads the notice.
