A tragic stampede at the Kericho Green Stadium before the start of  Mashujaa Day celebrations resulted in the death of four women and left 13 others injured. The incident took place at 3 am on Friday, before the stadium gates opened for the public for the national celebrations led by President William Ruto.

According to the police, the chaos erupted when a tea vendor accidentally spilled hot tea on an open fire near gate "C" on the public road. The spillage created a commotion as people mistakenly thought it was teargas, leading to a panicked rush.

The injured, fortunately, are in stable condition and were quickly taken to the Kericho County Referral Hospital for medical treatment. Meanwhile, the deceased were respectfully transferred to the hospital's morgue for proper identification and postmortem procedures.

The tragic event has cast a shadow over the much-anticipated celebrations, prompting an urgent call for increased safety measures at public gatherings to prevent such disasters from occurring in the future.
