Masalani Municipality declares war on Mathenge weed

The newly established Masalani Municipality Board is wasting no time tackling the town's environmental challenges, with a declared focus on eradicating the invasive mathenge (prosopis Juliflora) plant. Municipality Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Yussuf Mohamed Towane announced this priority alongside other initiatives during a recent meeting with board members.

"Cleanliness of the town, proper drainage, and eradication of the irksome mathenge weed" are the board's key areas of concern, Towane stated, acknowledging the plant's detrimental impact on both the environment and residents' well-being. Mathenge's rapid growth poses threats to visibility and safety along roads, and also harms other plant life by monopolizing water and nutrients.

To combat this menace, the municipality is launching "Operation Maliza Mathenge" within the next two weeks. This initiative will mobilize a team of local youth to uproot and burn the troublesome weed. This move not only addresses the environmental concerns but also provides employment opportunities for youth in unskilled and skilled roles like tea girls, ground staff, security guards, and clerical workers.

Beyond mathenge, the board intends to implement comprehensive strategies to improve the lives of Masalani residents. Their commitment to engaging local talent and prioritizing environmental initiatives signals a promising start for the newly established municipality.
