Governor Ahmed rallies Wajir residents to back affordable housing project

Residents who spoke raised concerns over the high cost of the affordable housing units.
Governor Ahmed Abdullahi has urged Wajir residents to embrace the affordable housing project to address the housing shortage in the county.
Speaking during the public participation of the Affordable Housing Bill, 2023 on Thursday, the governor called for an inclusive approach that would ensure policies are better suited to the needs and preferences of the community.

Residents who spoke raised concerns over the high cost of the affordable housing units.
They recommended lowering the housing units, especially in hardship areas for the locals to afford.
The residents proposed the house designs be based on the climatical conditions of the hardship region.

The locals also proposed the inclusion of the construction of a market for local traders as well as the tarmacking roads within the proposed sites.
They also called for the connection of Wajir town to the national grid due to address the persistent electricity supply crisis.
Construction workers who spoke during the meeting welcomed the project saying it was an opportunity for job creation for the youth in the area.
People with disabilities also voiced their concern on the design of the proposed housing projects asking designers to factor in their seamless access.

Representing Wajir Supkem branch, Adan Sheikh Ibrahim said the council supports the housing project that serves as an opportunity for the homeless people and the less fortunate members of the community.
The chairman of the Housing, Urban Planning and Public Works of the National Assembly, Johana Ng'eno told Wajir residents that their input would be useful in enriching the legislative proposal.
He appreciated their efforts and contribution to the Affordable Housing Bill.
