EACC confirms raid on Governor Natembeya’s Kitale home over Sh1.4 billion graft probe

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has confirmed that it raided the home of Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya in Kitale as part of investigations into alleged procurement irregularities, abuse of office, bribery and fraudulent acquisition of public funds amounting to Sh1.4 billion.
The early Monday morning operation, which started at 7 am, saw EACC officers, accompanied by their counterparts from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and escorted by anti-riot police from Kitale, enter the governor’s residence in the upscale Milimani neighbourhood.

EACC Chief Executive Officer Abdi Mohamed confirmed the raid, saying officers had accessed the home as part of the ongoing probe into alleged financial improprieties within the Trans Nzoia County Government.
The raid quickly drew the attention of locals, with a rowdy group of residents gathering outside the compound to protest against the operation.
Several journalists who attempted to take photos of the unfolding situation were reportedly roughed up by the agitated crowd.

“DCI officers came here, they searched the home thoroughly, but found nothing. I have talked to the governor, and he is safe somewhere in Nairobi. This is the worst form of intimidation by the government,” Wamalwa said.
Governor Natembeya was not at home during the search.
The investigation comes amid growing scrutiny of county governments and increased calls for accountability over the use of public funds.
