Tributes pour in as legendary journalist and presidential MC Sammy Lui Wang’ondu dies

Veteran journalist and former Director of State Functions Sammy Lui Wang’ondu has died.

Wang’ondu reportedly passed away on Thursday morning at his home in Subukia, Nakuru County. The cause of death has not yet been disclosed.

The former Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) and KTN broadcaster was found at his Subukia residence, with preliminary reports indicating he died while sitting on a chair.

Neighbours said he had been unwell and was living alone near the Subukia Marian National Shrine after relocating from Nairobi.

Lui was one of Kenya’s pioneering journalists, beginning his career at the Voice of Kenya (now KBC) before joining KTN. He later moved to the Office of the President as Director of State Events, where his voice became synonymous with national functions. He served as master of ceremonies during the administrations of former Presidents Daniel Moi, Mwai Kibaki, and part of Uhuru Kenyatta’s tenure.

Distinct, commanding voice

Known for his distinct, commanding voice and eloquence, Lui was widely regarded as a presidential MC whose presence resonated across stadiums and official events. He was also known for his sense of humour and charm, which enlivened national occasions.

Outside of his media career, Lui had lived in Nairobi’s Woodley Estate for over 50 years before relocating to Nakuru.

He was among residents affected by the government’s demolition of houses in the estate last year, raising concerns over the lack of public participation in the process.

Lui is survived by family members, including his son Nick Wang’ondu, a former Kenyan Big Brother housemate. His body has been moved to Umash Funeral Home in Nakuru as family and friends make burial arrangements.

Kenyans have taken to social media to mourn the veteran broadcaster, recalling his eloquence and significant contributions to media and State events.

Eliza Munyaga said, “He had the best voice. Growing up, he was unmatched when it came to MCing during public holidays. May his soul rest in peace.”

The exact cause of his death has not yet been established.
