IG Douglas Kanja assures Kenyans of heightened security ahead of festive season

IG Kanja said the National Police Service (NPS) is working closely with regional commanders, intelligence units, and other security agencies to prevent crime before it occurs.

The Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, has assured Kenyans of heightened security across the country as the festive season draws near, emphasising that the National Police Service (NPS) is adopting coordinated, intelligence-led strategies to safeguard citizens, businesses, and visitors.

Speaking on Friday during a consultative meeting with regional commanders in South C, Nairobi, Kanja said the National Police Service (NPS) is working closely with regional commanders, intelligence units, and other security agencies to prevent crime before it occurs.

“We must, from time to time, come together to discuss and strategise because we must at all times remain a step ahead of criminals,” he said.

He noted that coordinated operations will be intelligence-led, involving officers from the National Intelligence Service (NIS), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), ground commanders, and local police formations.

“We are hopeful that even as the festive season draws closer, all Kenyans will have enough security," he said.

Kanja highlighted that the festive period often brings increased travel, social gatherings, and commercial activities, factors that can sometimes lead to spikes in criminal offences such as alcohol-related incidents.

To counter these risks, he said patrols will be intensified in towns to detect and prevent potential criminal activities.

The IG issued a stern warning to individuals involved in the production and sale of illicit brews and narcotics, particularly the so-called second-generation alcohols.

He noted that such substances are destructive to society and said the police will work with national and county authorities to dismantle networks supplying harmful substances in residential and rural communities.

“All illicit brews and narcotic drugs are destroying our society,” Kanja said.

He also urged police officers to remain vigilant, disciplined, and professional while enforcing the law, stressing the need to uphold the dignity and rights of all Kenyans.

Regular consultations among commanders and intelligence units, he said, enable the police to detect and prevent crime before it occurs, ensuring that they stay a step ahead of criminals.

According to the IG, effective policing requires cooperation and information-sharing rather than working in isolation.

“When we all work together, we have intelligence-led operations, meaning everyone is contributing. We bring together all officers and agencies to ensure unity of purpose, and when we do that, we all succeed,” said Kanja.
