Tension in Samburu County as two people killed in fresh attacks

The attack is amongst the rising cases of gun attacks in the North Rift region which is under a heavy security operation dubbed Operation Maliza Uhalifu.
Tension remained high in the Sere Olipi area of Samburu County on Friday where two bodies were found lying in the bush approximately two kilometres off the area police station.
The deceased persons including a female aged 40 and a Samburu Moran aged approximately 20 years were found with gunshot wounds on various parts of their bodies including the abdomen, right hip, leg, and chest areas.

They were found by members of the public hours after they had been attacked.
They reported the matter to Sere Olipi police station whose officers accompanied by their General Service Unit colleagues processed the scene and moved the two bodies to the Isiolo County Referral Hospital mortuary ahead of an autopsy exercise.

On Wednesday, Samburu West Member of Parliament Naisula Lesuuda told the National Assembly committee on cohesion that at least 74 people have lost their lives in the hands of bandits despite the heavy security presence in the region.
She added that the insecurity had led to the displacement of 2,500 others whose children have had to miss school due to insecurity.
The MPs from banditry-prone areas of Laikipia, Samburu, West Pokot, Baringo, and Turkana counties criticised the ongoing operation claiming its tact was meant to fail as it failed to involve them as key stakeholders.
"We wonder about the agenda the CS has when he ignores elected leaders like us whenever he visits our constituencies for security meetings," said Kacheliba MP Titus Lotee.
Interior CS Kithure Kindiki has been meeting security and intelligence committees in the banditry-prone counties in efforts to end the vice that has plagued the region for decades.
During the visits, he has repeatedly warned politicians against politicising the ongoing joint operation between officers from the National Police Service (NPS) and the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) with a joint headquarters in Kainuk.
On March 6, the CS met with leaders from Samburu County and said the recent escalation of violent attacks in parts of Samburu County was unfortunate and pledged to respond strongly to efforts to dismantle organised gangs of bandits terrorizing innocent citizens within Samburu and neighbouring counties.
As the attacks occur, doubts arise about whether the fatalities will be investigated to identify the perpetrators.
"When they are all tagged as banditry attacks, we get worried. What if someone is taking advantage of the trend to commit their atrocities?" a leader from the region who spoke to the Eastleigh Voice on condition of anonymity posed.
