Abdinoor said the residents supported by a firefighting engine from the Kenya Airports Authority and the municipality firefighting engine managed to contain and prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings opposite the market.
“Unfortunately our fire engine developed a mechanical problem but we liaised with the Kenya Airport Authority who moved in to contain the spread of the fire," Abdinoor said.
He said an assessment of the extent of damage was still going on.
“The fire started at around 10 pm and from my nearby residence I saw smoke billowing into the night sky and flames shooting from the engulfed shops. I rushed to the scene to join the locals who volunteered to contain the fire using buckets of water and sand," Ismail Aden, a resident of Wajir town said.
Ismail said the Kenya Airports Authority fire engine played a crucial role before KDF joined in the firefighting rescue mission to salvage goods at the market.
