Northern Kenya to benefit from pioneer health equity program for reproductive, maternal, newborn, and adolescent health

In Nairobi today, a groundbreaking Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health Equity Health (RMNCAH) program for three counties in Northern Kenya was officially launched.
In Nairobi today, a groundbreaking Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health Equity Health (RMNCAH) program for three counties in Northern Kenya was officially launched. The three-year health strengthening initiative, set to be implemented in Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, and Isiolo, aims to enhance equity in healthcare services by elevating RMNCAH indicators across these four counties.
During the event, Governor Nathif Jama of Garissa expressed a warm welcome to the initiative, foreseeing its significant impact on the health sector. Governor Nathif highlighted the substantial investments made by counties in the health sector, attributing the promising health indicators in the 2022 Kenya Demographic Health Survey to these investments.

Governor Nathif highlighted the ongoing need for increased support from development partners to expedite the journey towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC). He commended USAID and UNICEF for their timely program, praising its focus on equity. He stated, "It is indeed a vital step towards achieving UHC, upholding human rights, combating discrimination, and improving social determinants of health."
Encouraging partners to contribute to the effective implementation of Primary HealthCare (PHC) as a gateway to UHC, Governor Jama stressed the importance of high-impact interventions in areas like infrastructure and health products and technologies.
In addressing the broader challenges, Governor Nathif called upon all stakeholders in the health sector to focus on building resilient health systems in the face of climate change. He stressed, "The health challenges caused by climate change are grave, making the need for mitigation and adaptation measures within the context of healthcare an urgent matter."
Deputy Governor Ahmed Mohamed of Wajir and Governor Mohamed Khalif of Mandera expressed their commitment to supporting the successful implementation of the program, scheduled to run from October 2023 to September 2026.
The event, held at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Nairobi, saw the attendance of Garissa Health's CECM, Ahmednadhir Omar. Representatives from the Ministry of Health were led by Dr. Isaak Bashir, Head of the Directorate of Family Health. USAID and UNICEF were represented by John Kuenhle and Dr. Yaron Wolman, respectively.
