Police stopped vehicles and pedestrians, with motorists being directed to use alternative roads except for vehicles with authorisation to use the routes.
Along Mamlaka Road, Nyerere Road and Processional Way, there were several police roadblocks with officers stationed in their lorries guarding the way to State House. The situation inconvenienced several motorists and pedestrians.
Police patrolled major roads such as Haile Selassie Avenue, which links to Nyerere Road and which can be used to access State House. The officers could be seen moving from one junction to the other in their vehicles.
On Wednesday, Acting Inspector-General of Police Gilbert Masengeli warned that the planned anti-government demonstrations planned for today (Thursday) could be infiltrated by goons.
He said the infiltration of criminal elements in the Gen Z-led protests dubbed the Nane Nane March is a threat to the country's security.
However, Masengeli said they had mobilised enough security personnel to deal with any eventualities.
“Already, our intelligence reports indicate that there are heightened security threats to the country, with criminals planning to infiltrate tomorrow’s demonstrations and commit further crimes," he said on Wednesday.
