New shift in public transport in Mombasa as electric tuk-tuks launched

Public transport in the coastal city of Mombasa is witnessing a significant shift towards eco-friendly vehicles with the launch of electric tuk-tuks.

The Piaggio Ape Electric vehicles by Car and General Trading Limited were unveiled on Thursday during a flag-off ceremony at Treasury Square, featuring the Ape E-City FX Max designed for passenger transport.

Currently, Mombasa has approximately 15,000 petrol-powered three-wheelers on its roads, highlighting the importance of this transition to electric tuk-tuks.

“Car and General is committed to making our customers smile in every street, in every town with quality products and after-sales services,” said the company’s Managing Director David Chesoni.

He noted that the new vehicles come with low maintenance costs, a one-year warranty, and a range of up to 120 kilometres on a full charge, potentially saving operators up to Sh26,000 per month on fuel and service.

The launch of the electric three-wheelers aligns with global trends towards greener transportation solutions.

Mombasa’s CECM for Tourism, Trade and Culture, Mohamed Ali Osman, said the initiative contributes to reducing carbon emissions and addressing climate change challenges.

“E-mobility and green energy solutions will cut down emissions, thereby promoting sustainable transportation practices within our county,” he said.

“By introducing electric tuk-tuks, we are not only revolutionising the way people move around Mombasa but also spearheading the transition from traditional petrol-fuelled vehicles to environmentally-friendly electric mobility solutions. This move aligns with our commitment to reducing the carbon footprint generated by the transport sector, thereby contributing to a cleaner and greener environment for current and future generations,” he added.

Chesoni highlighted the economic benefits of electric three-wheelers, which are designed to enhance earnings for operators by offering better range, gradability, and load-carrying capacity.

The launch was attended by county government officials, industry stakeholders, and corporate partners, all of whom expressed support for the initiative.

Chesoni said the introduction of the vehicles not only revolutionises transport in the region but also sets a precedent for other cities in Kenya to consider sustainable solutions.

“Car and General, a long-standing distributor of Piaggio products since 2002, aims to lead Kenya’s electric vehicle mission and promote a cleaner environment for future generations,” he said.
