The food and non-food items distributed include rice, beans, cooking oil, jerrican detergents and mosquito nets.

Hundreds of families in Ijara constituency affected by the El Nino floods yesterday received food and non-food items donated by the Yusuf Haji Trust Foundation.

A police helicopter delivered the consignment to the residents of Hulugho, Ijara and Bothai sub counties considered to be the worst affected following the El Niño rains.

The foundation was formed in honour of the late Garissa Senator Mohamed Yusuf Haji who passed away in February 2015.

Daud Mohamed, who was among the community elders coordinating the distribution, said the food and non-food items distributed include rice, beans, cooking oil, jerrican detergents and mosquito nets.

“In the four-day distribution exercise we have covered Sangailu, Gababa, Hara, Abaltiro and Korisa centres and right now we are loading more consignments destined for the Hollugho sub-county," Daud said.

Orphanage centres in Masalani town also received wheat flour and blankets from the foundation.

Recently, the national government supported by WFP airlifted relief food and drugs to the sub-counties in Ijara constituency.
