Despite missing the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams last year, approximately 2,000 students will still have the opportunity to join secondary school this January. Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu announced this on Monday, offering these students a pathway to continue their education.
Instead of sitting the standard KCPE exam, these students will join Form One alongside their peers who did take the exam and will complete a separate qualifying exam later. This qualifying exam will be administered before they reach Form Three, ensuring they meet the necessary requirements to progress further.

"After reviewing the number of students who missed the exams, we've identified 2,000 eligible learners who will now join Form One on January 15th," stated Machogu. "They will, however, need to sit their qualifying exams before starting Form Three to register for the KCSE exams in Form Four."
This decision comes after an initial announcement in November 2023, outlining plans for a special exam this month for the nearly 9,400 students who missed the KCPE. Following further investigation, the final number of eligible students requiring alternative arrangements was adjusted to 2,000.
This shift ensures that these students haven't lost their chance at secondary education due to missing the standard KCPE exam. By providing them with alternative pathways and clear expectations, the Ministry of Education is offering them a brighter future.
