RSF attack on Darfur camp kills 40 civilians, injures 19 in escalating Sudan conflict

The civil war, which began in April 2023 between the RSF and the Sudanese army, has plunged Sudan into violent conflict, killing thousands and forcing more than 10 million people from their homes.

Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Monday killed at least 40 civilians at a displacement camp in Darfur, a community activist group has confirmed.

According to the Emergency Response Room, RSF fighters raided the Abu Shouk displacement camp and opened fire indiscriminately on civilians. The attack left about 40 people dead and at least 19 injured.

The group, which provides aid across Sudan, said most of the deaths were caused by stray bullets or direct executions.

Abu Shouk Camp, which shelters around 450,000 displaced people, lies north of el-Fasher — the last major city in Darfur still under Sudanese army control.

The civil war, which began in April 2023 between the RSF and the Sudanese army, has plunged Sudan into violent conflict, killing thousands and forcing more than 10 million people from their homes.

The war has effectively split the country: the army controls the north, east and central regions, while the RSF holds most of Darfur and the south.

Camps like Abu Shouk have faced repeated attacks, worsening the humanitarian crisis. The camp has also been hit hard by famine.

According to AP News, the Humanitarian Research Lab at Yale University verified Monday’s attack using satellite imagery, which showed about 40 vehicles positioned in the camp’s northwest section. Yale also cited photos and videos allegedly showing RSF fighters shooting at people as they tried to flee.

The Sudanese army said it had repelled a “large-scale attack from several axes” by the RSF, inflicting heavy losses on the militia in both personnel and equipment.

"Our forces repelled a large-scale attack from several axes by the terrorist militia and inflicted heavy losses on the enemy in lives and equipment, as more than 16 combat vehicles were destroyed and burned and 34 vehicles, including armoured cars, were captured," the army claimed in a statement.

Meanwhile, in North Kordofan province, the RSF has been accused of forcing more than 3,000 families from 66 villages to flee since early August, according to the Sudan Doctors Network.

The group also alleged that RSF fighters looted homes, taking money and livestock from displaced residents. Many of those forced to flee have sought refuge in Khartoum and White Nile provinces.
