Government commits Sh100 billion infrastructure investment for North Eastern region

Murkomen said they have already set aside the money after consultation with development partners like the World Bank, adding that they are also working with the Defence and Interior Ministries to provide security during road construction.

The Cabinet Secretary for Roads, Transport and Public Works Kipchumba Murkomen has disclosed that the Kenyan  Government has invested up to Sh100 billion to connect North Eastern counties.

The CS described the initiative as a massive restoration of infrastructure in the region, assuring that the Kenya Kwanza administration led by President William Ruto will not leave any region behind in development.

"There is no region that is getting the biggest infrastructure, a guaranteed amount of money in the next three years like North Eastern...when rains subside the contractor will be on-site to start work," said the CS.

Murkomen said they have already set aside the money after consultation with development partners like the World Bank, adding that they are also working with the Defence and Interior Ministries to provide security during road construction.

“Ours is to ensure that the North Eastern that has been ignored will now have a high potential and have the counties of the future for our country,” added the CS.

Besides infrastructure, the CS noted that the Kenya Kwanza Government has plans to build more schools, construct boreholes, water pans, and health centres, amongst other development projects.

Murkomen was speaking during the launch of funds for flood victims in Garissa on Monday where he was accompanied by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and a host of other leaders.

Murkomen said the heavy investment in the Northern Frontier counties would make a big difference, adding that Ruto's regime will be the one to connect marginalised areas to the rest of the country.

The CS said they are working with the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and Coast Guards for easy movement in case the El Nino rains continue.

Garissa Senator Abdul Haji asked the Transport CS to also look into Garissa and Masalani Bridges saying they have not been maintained properly in the recent past.
