Hundreds of Wajir residents unite for municipality clean-up exercise

In a remarkable show of community solidarity, hundreds of Wajir residents came together on Saturday to take part in the Wajir municipality clean-up exercise, aimed at promoting a cleaner and healthier environment.
Volunteers from the local community, the Wajir Boda Boda Association, Kenya Red Cross, Siyat Foundation, Equity Bank, and Kenya Commercial Bank participated in the initiative, which was coordinated by Wajir Municipality officials.

Roble Mohamed Ali, a community elder from Griftu Stage who took part in the exercise, praised the collective responsibility shown by the community and organisations. He described it as a rare and valuable symbol of solidarity that must be preserved.
“We need to sustain this initiative. It is our responsibility to value cleanliness and ensure a healthy environment,” he urged. Roble also encouraged private clinics and hotel owners in Wajir to improve waste disposal practices.
Osman Ali, a youth from Bulla Barwaqo, expressed his enthusiasm for being part of the clean-up alongside other young volunteers.
“The organisers of this event introduced a commendable initiative that will help maintain cleanliness in Wajir municipality. We appeal to the municipality office to regularly designate a specific day for clean-up, so everyone can contribute,” he said.
Wajir Municipality Manager, Omar Shano, who oversaw the voluntary exercise, emphasised that the joint clean-up was organised to foster a spirit of solidarity and shared responsibility for keeping Wajir clean.
He highlighted the strong turnout for the event, which followed engagement with the community and organisations three days prior.
“We are impressed by the large turnout for this exercise, which is the first of its kind. It inspires a collective commitment towards achieving a safe and clean environment,” he noted.
The manager announced that the municipality office has designated the last Saturday of every calendar month as a clean-up day for the town.
He also expressed gratitude to transport sector members who provided 20 trucks to support the event, highlighting the importance of such partnerships in maintaining the municipality’s cleanliness.
