Fafi milk programme launched to attract learners as MP seeks more resources

Education stakeholders and parents welcomed the idea, saying it would keep many learners in school.
Due to the low enrolment of children in schools across the Fafi constituency, area MP Salah Yakub has resorted to launching free milk to attract learners in schools.
During the event on Friday, MP Salah said resource allocations for schools are pegged on the number of learners in schools, a reason, he said, the schools are facing shortages even for staffing.
"Resources are given according to a number of learners, for us to have more teachers and other resources we must have more children in schools," said the MP.
The milk contained in 200ml packed has a trade mark of 'hangool', the lawmaker's campaign signatures.
He was accompanied by Kenya Co-operative Creamieries head of Marketing Pius Mutua and other officials.
The MP warned school heads against selling the products, saying chiefs are under strict instructions to ensure the milk does not find itself in shops.

Mohamud Ahmed, a parent in Kamuthey, said many learners had ended up being herders and therefore the initiative will ensure they remain in school.
"This is a very noble initiative, I have not gone to school, but I'm sure this will help boost school enrolment," said Mohamud Ahmed, a parent in Kamuthey.
According to the MP, learners are supposed to be given milk in the morning and the evening every day. He noted that it will also help in their growth as it is nutritious.
