Mandera Governor Mohamed Khalif wins 2025 People’s Choice Award for education reforms

Other winners included Turkana Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai, who was awarded for excellence in social welfare, alongside Fernandez Barasa (Kakamega), Nathif Jama (Garissa), and Kimani Wa Matangi (Kiambu), who were recognized in various categories.
Mandera Governor Mohamed Khalif has been named a recipient of the 2025 People's Choice Governor's Excellence Award for his transformative Elimu Kwa Wote initiative, which seeks to expand access to education in Mandera County.
The award was accepted on his behalf by Chief of Staff Issadin Adawa Edo during a ceremony in Paris, France.

The international event celebrates people-centred leadership, strengthens democratic governance, and fosters peer-to-peer learning among public leaders from Africa and Europe.
In a statement, the county government noted that the recognition would further strengthen Mandera’s commitment to expanding education, improving infrastructure, and enhancing learning outcomes for thousands of students.
"Governor Khalif's initiatives have had a profound impact on education in Mandera County.
The Elimu Kwa Wote Initiative has benefited 40,069 learners, comprising 34,372 secondary school students and 5,697 university and college students.
ECDE learning
Other initiatives include the recruitment of 450 ECDE teachers, construction of 66 new ECDE classrooms, provision of ECDE learning materials and furniture, and a school feeding program for ECDE learners," the statement read.
The government also highlighted additional efforts, including a 50 per cent scholarship for more than 1,000 trainee teachers at the Mandera Teachers Training College and the provision of start-up kits to graduates of technical and vocational training centres.
"These initiatives demonstrate the Governor's commitment to promoting education as a key driver of development in Mandera County," the statement continued.
"The People's Choice Governor's Excellence Award is a testament to Governor Khalif's dedication to improving the lives of his people through education. His leadership and vision have earned him recognition on the international stage, and his initiatives continue to inspire hope and opportunity for the people of Mandera County," it added.
Several other governors were also recognised at the event. Turkana Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai received an award for excellence in social welfare, while Fernandez Barasa (Kakamega), Nathif Jama (Garissa), and Kimani Wa Matangi (Kiambu) were also honoured in various categories.
