Mandera Governor Khalif commissions upgraded Kutulo Hospital, boosting local healthcare

Governor Khalif said the county had made what he described as “tremendous milestones” in efforts to enhance access to healthcare for residents living far from the Mandera County Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Mandera Governor Mohamed Khalif has taken a major step in improving health service delivery by commissioning new and expanded facilities at Kutulo Sub-County Referral Hospital.

The event drew county leaders, community representatives, and residents who gathered to witness the launch of the upgraded units.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Khalif said the county had made what he described as “tremendous milestones” in efforts to enhance access to healthcare for residents living far from the Mandera County Teaching and Referral Hospital.

He noted that the new capacity at Kutulo would help ease pressure on the main referral facility, as many patients would now be able to receive treatment within the sub-county.

“Kutulo Sub-County Hospital can now serve as a hub for eight primary healthcare facilities. “With these upgrades, residents of Kutulo will no longer have to travel long distances for critical services,” Governor Khalif said.

Reduce patients' long journeys

The governor explained that the hospital’s expansion will reduce the long journeys patients previously made from village health centres to the main hospital in search of services unavailable at lower-level facilities.

During the event, Governor Khalif commissioned a new theatre, a radiology unit, and male, female, and paediatric wards. He highlighted that these units were fully equipped to offer a wide range of services that had previously been out of reach for many patients.

He also inaugurated a dental unit and an upgraded laboratory, emphasising that these improvements were part of a broader county plan to boost the capacity of health facilities across Mandera.

Governor Khalif added that the hospital could now handle emergency and elective surgeries, including Caesarean sections, and provide diagnostic services such as X-rays and ultrasound scans.

“This expansion means our people can now receive quality care right here at home. It is a huge step toward reducing unnecessary referrals,” he said.

Public forum

Following the commissioning, Governor Khalif was joined by Senator Ali Roba, Mandera North MP Bashir Abdullahi, Kutulo MCA Mohamed Rashid Golo, and community elders at a public forum in Kotulo town.

The forum brought together residents and leaders to discuss ongoing development projects as well as plans for future initiatives.

During the meeting, the governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening health systems across the county. He encouraged residents to actively participate in public forums to help county leadership better understand community needs and plan projects accordingly.

He also stressed that the county was committed to advancing what he called equitable service delivery, assuring residents that Kutulo would continue to receive support to ensure the new hospital functions effectively and meets the community’s expectations.
