"Sangailu Police Station was attacked by Al-Shabaab militants at around 23:15 hours. Our officers repulsed the enemy and there was no casualty report on our side. The area has remained calm," a police report stated.
The incident caused panic among locals as the fierce fire exchange went on for more than an hour. Dozens of spent cartridges were strewn at the scene.
Security sources said the militants seemingly divided themselves into groups, with some firing within the town centre and others targeting the police station.
"National Police Reservists and police responded by firing back and in the end, they were subdued and fled into nearby bushes," said a source who requested anonymity for lack of authority to speak to the media.
Mohamed said security agencies were pursuing the attackers and assured residents of protection.
"We have always encouraged citizens to take security as their primary concern and work closely with security agencies," he said.
Residents praised the security agencies for the operation, saying they were frightened and confused when they heard the gunfire.
"We commend security officers for their efforts to repulse the attackers," one Mohamed Ahmed told The Eastleigh voice.
