Garissa governor pledges cooperation amid EACC probe into county officials

Speaking from his office to end speculation on the EACC's raids last week, the governor said such operations were normal.

Garissa Governor Nathif Jama has pledged to cooperate with the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) in ongoing investigations that have seen the agency raid county officials' offices and arrest some.

Speaking from his office to end speculation on the EACC's raids last week, the governor said such operations were normal.

"It's normal for the EACC to undertake such operations. Almost six counties were raided on the same day. We are used to this," he said in his video message, noting his county would cooperate in the probe into allegations of abuse of office and embezzlement.

Nathif urged the public not to spread false information that has stirred a panic.

"I was shocked by a false message peddled on social media, alleging my arrest and a raid on my residential house," he said, adding that Photoshop was used to manipulate images and deceive the public.

He also appealed to the youth against engaging in social media propaganda, saying this is destructive behaviour and that they should rather spend their time developing meaningful ideas.

The governor's message to the public came two days after the county communication office released a statement in response to the claims of his arrest, asking the people to disregard them.

The EACC arrested county officials from the health department and the county secretary's office but they were released after being questioned.
