In response to the ongoing El Niño rains causing the overflow of Lake Turkana and subsequent displacement in Turkana County, a multiagency team has initiated an impact assessment program. The three-day assessment aims to evaluate the threats posed by the flooded lake and gather crucial data for effective humanitarian intervention responses.
The County Director for Risk Management highlighted the significance of the assessment, emphasizing its role in providing essential information for response planning. Upon completion, the report will be shared with the County Steering Group, comprising members from the County, National, and Non-Governmental Organizations operating in the region.
The decision to conduct the impact assessment was prompted by the widespread displacement of people and the loss of property along the shores of Lake Turkana. The affected areas include Eliye, Naoros, Namukuse, Kalokol, Katiko, Nachukui, Kataboi, Lowareng’ak, and Tadonyong, all of which historically face challenges of massive displacement during the rainy season.
The multi-sectoral team, led by the County Directorate of Disaster Risk Management, includes representatives from the National Drought Management Authority, Save the Children, Kenya Red Cross, International Rescue Committee, UNICEF, Danish Refugee Council, and World Vision."
