Officials from the Workers' Union Branch stated they decided to call off the strike after a meeting with the governor on Sunday

Health workers in Garissa, who had planned to strike on Monday, called off their action after engaging in talks with Garissa Governor Nathif Jama, who promised to address their grievances within 90 days.

Officials from the Workers' Union Branch stated they decided to call off the strike after a meeting with the governor on Sunday, during which they agreed that all their grievances would be addressed.

Diriye Ismail, the Garissa Branch Secretary for the Kenya Union of Nurses and Midwives, said they had presented their concerns, most of which centred on human resource issues.

"The basis for the strike was the lack of promotions, lack of redesignations for those who completed higher education, and absence of leave and uniform allowances," he said.

Lawi Mwagome, the Branch Secretary for Laboratory Officers, also confirmed that they called off the strike after a successful negotiation meeting with the governor.

"The governor promised to immediately begin addressing the issues we presented, and as agreed, all our grievances will be resolved within 90 days," he said.

Aden Hassan, the Dertu Ward Member of the County Assembly and the chairman of the Assembly Health Committee, who attended the return-to-work meeting, assured healthcare workers that the County Assembly would actively perform its oversight role to ensure the executive addresses the concerns raised by union representatives for nurses, laboratory officers, and clinical officers.

"We are pleased with the agreement reached to prevent the disruption of healthcare services, and we will play our part to ensure healthcare workers receive what they deserve most," he stated.

The governor, speaking after the meeting on Sunday, reassured healthcare workers of his commitment to the agreement with the union officials.

He stated that some of the issues raised would be addressed immediately, while others would be implemented following a supplementary budget submission to the County Assembly to meet the healthcare workers' needs.

"Healthcare services are an area we cannot ignore; they are essential, and I will give my full attention to prioritise the needs of the workers and health infrastructure," he declared.

He issued a clarion call to all healthcare workers to call off the strike, expressing hope that their issues would be resolved.
