Borana community gets new chairman for council of elders in colourful ceremony

Ululations and songs filled the air as the outgoing community leader, retired Chief Abdullahi Haji, handed over the instruments of power to the incoming leader, Mohamed Konso.
The Borana community of Isiolo and Marsabit installed a new chairman of the Borana Council of Elders in a colourful ceremony held at Ayyo village in Isiolo.
Ululations and songs filled the air as the outgoing community leader, retired Chief Abdullahi Haji, handed over the instruments of power to the incoming leader, Mohamed Konso.

Mohamed Konso Halo, a career social worker and former CEO of the Kenya Human Rights Commission who has also served in several international non-governmental organisations, including ActionAid, was installed as the new chairman at the event, where Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya was the chief guest.
The newly installed chairman pledged to unite the community and take active steps towards fostering peaceful coexistence among all communities in Isiolo and Marsabit counties.
"I am truly committed to serving you, championing your rights, and ensuring peaceful coexistence for all communities," he said.
He thanked his predecessor for his active leadership role and promised to work with him when needed.
He also pledged to work towards socio-economic growth, community land registration, and strengthening dispute resolution.
The Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and SMEs, Wycliffe Oparanya, lauded the community for their commitment to appointing a leader well-suited to champion their rights.
He emphasised the need for unity and cohesiveness among the communities living in Isiolo. He encouraged the new leadership to remain committed and transparent in their duties.
Marsabit Governor Mohamud Ali also noted the need for unity and an inclusive approach to achieve success and socio-economic prosperity.
He praised both the incoming and outgoing Borana leadership for their successful transfer of power.
Among the notable leaders who also called for unity were Principal Secretary for ASALs and Regional Development Kello Harsama, Principal Secretary for the State Department of Petroleum Mohamed Liban, CEO for Sports, Arts, and Social Development Nuh Mohamed Ibrahim, Marsabit Woman Representative Naomi Wako, Isiolo South MP Mohamed Tupi, Tigania MP Mpuru Aburi, Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Ruku, and other former political leaders.
Elders representing other communities in Isiolo also attended the event.
