The training was aimed at de-escalating recently witnessed simmering tensions between the communities in Samburu North.

In an effort to strengthen peaceful coexistence among warring communities in the Samburu north region, women groups, chiefs and security heads took part in a peace-building workshop in Baragoi town.

Samburu county's directorate on peace-building in partnership with the USAID Nawiri held the training that the county government said was aimed at de-escalating recently witnessed simmering tensions between the communities in Samburu North.

In a statement, the county peace directorate stated that the training would also help to strengthen early warnings to avert potential inter-community conflicts and support chiefs to adopt a culture of conflict-sensitive programming of interventions at the grassroots level.

"One of the deliberations of the forum was the formation of the Samburu North women's peace caucus which was highlighted as a crucial entity in peace-building at the family and communal level," the statement read.

The directorate said the conflict in the region has contributed to malnutrition as families were getting displaced by insecurity.

Florence Nasieku, USAID Nawiri programme manager for Samburu North said chiefs and assistant chiefs play a crucial role in addressing conflict at the village level.

"This training will further empower them to implement conflict resolution among the warring communities," she said.

Samburu County is among the counties in Northern Kenya grappling with prolonged incidents of banditry attacks and cattle rustling that have led to the loss of lives.
