Pipeline power through as KCB and Prisons fall in CAVB quarters

Kenya Pipeline are through to the semifinals of the 2025 CAVB Women’s Club Volleyball Championships after a commanding win over APR of Rwanda. With KCB and Kenya Prisons falling at the quarterfinal stage, Pipeline now carry the country’s hopes of ending a 20-year continental title drought.

Five-time African champions Kenya Pipeline remain on course to end a 20-year continental drought after brushing aside Rwanda’s APR 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-14) in their quarterfinal tie at the ongoing 2025 CAVB Women's Club Volleyball Championships on Wednesday in Abuja, Nigeria.

The emphatic win saw Pipeline avenge their 3-1 (25-20, 17-25, 24-26, 23-25) loss to the Rwandan side in the 2025 CAVB Zone 5 final in March — a defeat that denied them back-to-back titles, having lifted the trophy in 2024.

Pipeline had reached the last eight after thrashing Botswana's Spiking Stars 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-6) in the Round of 16. They will now face Zamalek of Egypt in the semifinal.

That tie presents another revenge mission, with Zamalek having beaten Pipeline 3-1 (25-22, 18-25, 25-15, 25-17) in the 2023 final to claim the African crown.

With Pipeline now the only Kenyan team left standing in the semifinals, the clash against Zamalek is not just about redemption — it’s a chance to end the stranglehold Egyptian clubs have had over their Kenyan counterparts at this competition.

Zamalek booked their spot after eliminating two-time winners KCB 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-20, 25-21) in their quarterfinal match.

The other semifinal pits Egypt’s record 10-time champions Al Ahly against Tunisia’s CF Carthage. Al Ahly overcame Kenya Prisons 3-1 (25-12, 25-20, 22-25, 27-25), while Carthage saw off Cameroon’s Litto 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-22).

Kenyan clubs are winless in their last eight matches against Egyptian opposition — a poor run that stretches back to the 2022 final, where KCB stunned Al Ahly 3-1 (25-18, 25-22, 11-25, 28-26).

While Kenya Pipeline continue to chase the title, KCB and Kenya Prisons have been relegated to the 5th–8th place classification bracket.
