Police in hot pursuit of criminals who killed two KWS officers in Marsabit

A manhunt is on for suspected poachers who shot dead two Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) rangers who were on patrol within the Sibiloi National Game Reserve in North Horr, Marsabit County.

The two officers, including an assistant warden, were ambushed along the shores of Lake Turkana at the Karsa Gate in Sibiloi at around 6 pm on Thursday.

The assistant warden died at the scene, while the other officer succumbed hours later. Their bodies were taken to the Sibiloi National Game Reserve headquarters and airlifted to Nairobi for postmortems.

Acting County Commissioner David Saruni said two fierce shootouts ensued on Friday afternoon between three armed criminals and security officers pursuing the killers.

"The armed gang was pursued but escaped into the bushes. Another gunfight occurred on further pursuit, which was made by foot and air (chopper)," Saruni told The Eastleigh Voice.

He said a security operation was underway and that the suspects' footprints had been traced to a hill near Kambi Turkana.

The county commissioner noted that the government was keen on bringing the culprits to book.

"We are not surrendering. We will pursue these bandits to the bitter end."
