Uhuru: I choose silence to avoid backlash from authorities

Uhuru emphasised that the young generation holds the key to shaping the future and assured them of his full support, along with that of other leaders.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has said that he now chooses silence over speaking out publicly because doing so often attracts backlash from those currently in authority.

Uhuru made the remarks during the wedding reception of Kimoi, son of KANU Chairman Gideon Moi, on Friday.

The former Head of State said that he no longer shares much in public, as his views are often dismissed and met with resistance.

“These days, I don’t have much to say. Every time I open my mouth, I seem to get myself in trouble with the powers, so I’d rather keep my mouth shut,” he said.

Reflecting on his own rise to leadership, Uhuru recalled how the late President Daniel arap Moi, who was his mentor, selected him for leadership when he was still young, ahead of many experienced politicians.

He used the story to encourage the youth to begin their leadership journeys without fear or hesitation.

“You guys are the future, don’t be cowed, start now. Who knows what God has in store for you? We are there to support you,” he said.

Uhuru emphasised that the young generation holds the key to shaping the future and assured them of his full support, along with that of other leaders.

His comments appeared to respond to recent criticism from state officials, including Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, who accused the former president of using the youth for political gain.

The backlash comes after a recent address by Uhuru at the second annual Guild Leaders’ Summit held at Makerere University in Uganda, where he delivered a passionate appeal to student leaders from across the continent.

“You are the last line of defence in the battle to rescue the heart and soul of Africa,” he told the audience.

Uhuru urged young people to step up and take part in governance, saying they had what it takes to bring about real change.

“You have the numbers; you have the time and you have the energy to get involved and stay involved in governance discussions until you effect the changes you wish to see,” he said.

He further described the current period as a defining moment for the continent, likening it to a new independence era where Africa must shape its destiny.

Despite the criticism, Uhuru maintained that his call to the youth was genuine and rooted in his belief in their potential. He said young people should not wait for approval to act but should begin to lead now, as no one can predict what the future holds.

The retired president has maintained a low profile since leaving office in 2022, only occasionally making public statements. His comments at the Makerere summit and the recent wedding ceremony have once again placed him at the centre of political attention.
