Raphael Tuju resigns from Uhuru-led Jubilee Party

Tuju, who has been out of the country for six weeks, acknowledged that he is not fully aware of recent developments within Jubilee
Former Jubilee Secretary General Raphael Tuju has formally resigned from the party, citing his inability to add further value to its activities.
In a letter addressed to former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who remains Jubilee’s leader, Tuju said he looks forward to working with him in the future but, at present, sees no role for himself within the party.

“I still look forward to working with you in future. However, at the present time, I see no more value that I can add to the Jubilee Party. I therefore tender my resignation. Please accept my best wishes for your well-being and for the Party,” Tuju stated in the letter.
Tuju, who has been out of the country for six weeks, acknowledged that he is not fully aware of recent developments within Jubilee.
He thanked Uhuru Kenyatta for giving him the opportunity to serve as the party’s Secretary General from 2016 to 2022.
He described his appointment as a bold political step, noting that he came from the Luo community while Jubilee was largely anchored in the Kikuyu and Kalenjin communities.
His goal, he said, was to help build a national party that transcends ethnic divisions.
He recalled facing political rejection in the past alongside Kenyatta for not being seen as fully loyal to their ethnic bases.
Tuju said the 2018 handshake between Kenyatta and Raila Odinga caused internal friction in Jubilee and strained his relationship with William Ruto, despite attempts to resolve the differences.
He praised Uhuru’s peace initiative, saying it helped prevent instability, and noted that Ruto later took a similar step following the Gen Z protests of 2024.
“I remained loyal to you as President, Party Leader, and cabinet member,” Tuju stated.
He emphasised his continued belief that Kenyans can unite to tackle unemployment and poverty rather than divide along tribal lines.
Tuju also extended his good wishes to Jubilee and paid tribute to his long political association with Uhuru Kenyatta.
Before leaving his post as Secretary General, he was named Executive Director of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance, an outfit led by Raila Odinga with Kenyatta serving as chairperson.
