Activist Boniface Mwangi enters 2027 presidential race with justice and equity agenda

Mwangi stressed the urgent need for leadership that puts the welfare of ordinary Kenyans first and transforms their aspirations into practical policies.

Activist and social justice champion Boniface Mwangi has officially announced his candidacy for the presidency in the 2027 General Election, pledging to lead a “new Kenya” founded on justice, equity, and democratic values.

Speaking at Ufungamano House in Nairobi during Katiba Day celebrations, Mwangi underscored the urgent need for leadership that prioritises the welfare of ordinary Kenyans and translates their aspirations into concrete policies.

He urged citizens to take responsibility for shaping the country’s destiny.

“The future of our country is in our hands. No one else,” he said, calling on Kenyans to rise above division and work together for national progress.

Gen Z protests

Mwangi also honoured the young lives lost in the Gen Z protests, describing them as martyrs for change.

“Young lives were cut short by a murderous state. We shall forever remember those young people. We shall honour their sacrifice. It was not in vain,” he said.

Reflecting on the 15 years since the enactment of the 2010 Constitution, Mwangi likened it to a “baby” betrayed by those entrusted with its care.

“We gave birth to a beautiful baby called the Kenyan Katiba and gave it to child traffickers. Since that time, we’ve been trying to fulfil and implement the Constitution, but the people in power have been trying to kill that baby. I’m happy the baby is still alive, struggling, but all of us are going to ensure that baby lives and thrives so that our kids can enjoy a better Kenya,” he said.

A lifelong human rights advocate, Mwangi anchored his campaign on inclusivity and accountability, vowing to address systemic injustices and unite Kenyans across ethnic and generational divides. He also drew on personal reflections, recalling memories of his late mother and affirming his enduring commitment to the country’s well-being.

2027 race taking shape

Although the 2027 General Election is still more than two years away, the race is already taking shape.

President William Ruto is widely expected to seek re-election, though he has not yet declared his candidacy.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has confirmed his intention to run, insisting he remains legally eligible despite past impeachment proceedings.

Other possible contenders include ODM leader Raila Odinga, who has said he is undecided and focused on strengthening his party; former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i; former Justice Minister and PLP leader Martha Karua; Busia Senator and activist Okiya Omtatah; former Chief Justice David Maraga; and Amina Halake Dida of the Alliance for Change party, wife of former presidential candidate Abduba Dida.

Mwangi’s campaign emphasises citizen participation and a break from the political status quo. By focusing on inclusivity, accountability, and unity, he positions himself as an alternative voice offering Kenyans a new vision of leadership ahead of the 2027 polls.
