Sifuna’s Kenya Moja outfit vows to end Ruto’s reign in 2027

The outspoken senator, seen by some as a renegade within his own ODM party, declared that their campaign would centre on ensuring Ruto serves only one term.
Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna on Friday led fellow leaders in their Kenya Moja outfit to announce plans to unseat President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
Sifuna, together with Saboti MP Caleb Hamisi and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, joined their Githunguri counterpart Gathoni wa Muchomba at the launch of the Githunguri Avocado Growers’ Cooperative Society. The leaders used the occasion to attack Ruto’s administration, accusing it of abetting misrule and tribalism.

“If you are killing people, it does not matter what else you are doing for them,” said Sifuna, in reference to the Ruto administration’s record on the rule of law and human rights.
The outspoken senator, seen by some as a renegade within his own ODM party, declared that their campaign would centre on ensuring Ruto serves only one term.
“Ruto asking us to tell him our policies is laughable. We will just chant ‘one term’ the same way he once chanted about the hustler narrative before his election,” Sifuna said.
He revealed that their movement had elaborate plans to seek audiences with churches and other social groupings across the country as part of efforts to combat tribalism.
Echoing him, Babu Owino and Caleb Hamisi argued that older leaders are responsible for perpetuating ethnic divisions.
“There are people who have zoned the country along tribal lines, but young people are coming out to oppose that because we must have one country that belongs to everyone,” said Hamisi.
“We are not mad or misguided to form an outfit that will ensure Ruto serves only one term. The older generation must go home. They must be dislodged from leadership because they have failed us. Tribalism is only practised by weak leaders,” he said.
Sifuna has recently broken ranks with ODM, which has been working with Ruto’s administration. While on a similar mission in Saboti, he announced that he would leave the party if it chose to back Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027.
He has maintained that party loyalty must not override personal conviction, especially on matters as weighty as endorsing a presidential candidate.
“I assure ODM supporters that my stance remains. Raila (Odinga) himself has said that this is a democratic party and any member is free to speak their mind. Yet some thugs claim I cannot hold views independent of the party simply because I am the secretary-general, that I represent the party at all times,” Sifuna said.
Critics have branded Sifuna a party rebel for his continued criticism of Ruto’s government despite ODM’s working arrangement with the ruling United Democratic Alliance, which created the ‘broad-based’ government that ushered opposition figures into state appointments.
“I am willing to read whatever statement ODM comes up with for dissemination, even if it insults me. But the day the party decides it wants to support Ruto in 2027, that, I will not read.”
