ODM officially confirms Oburu Oginga as Party Leader, approves key leadership positions

The NGC also approved Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir, Godfrey Osotsi, and Simba Arati as Deputy Party Leaders (DPLs).

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party’s National Governing Council (NGC) has formally approved and confirmed Siaya Senator Dr Oburu Oginga as the party’s new leader.

The appointment elevates Oburu from an interim role he assumed following the death of his brother and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on October 15, 2025, in India.

The NGC also approved Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir, Godfrey Osotsi, and Simba Arati as Deputy Party Leaders (DPLs).

"The National Governing Council (NGC) has approved the appointment of Senator Oburu Odinga as the Party Leader of the party. Also approved are DPLs Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir, Godfrey Osotsi, and Simba Arati as Deputy Party Leaders," ODM said.

Other leadership appointments include Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga as Deputy Organising Secretary, Rosa Buyu, Kisumu West MP, as Secretary of Political Affairs, and Otiende Amollo (Rarieda MP) and Ariko Namoit (Turkana South MP) as Vice Chairpersons, joining Johnes Mwaruma and Christine Lemein.

All appointees will formally assume office subject to ratification by the National Delegates Convention (NDC).

The developments come as ODM prepares to celebrate its 20th anniversary in Mombasa, with Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir playing a central role in hosting the celebrations from November 14-16, 2025.

Oburu’s confirmation consolidates his position at the helm of one of Kenya’s most influential political parties, ensuring continuity and stability following a period of national mourning and internal transition.
