UDA summons Kericho MCAs over Governor Erick Mutai's impeachment crisis

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has summoned all 38 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) in Kericho to a crisis meeting to address Governor Erick Mutai's looming impeachment.

In a letter dated September 30, 2024, UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar called for the crisis meeting scheduled for Tuesday, October 1, 2024. The meeting is intended to address the political tensions in the county and possibly prevent Governor Mutai's removal from office.

“The party has been keenly following developments in Kericho County, especially regarding the governor's impeachment. It is our view that the county's harmony and good order are necessary to enable us to deliver on our election pledges,” Omar said in the letter.

Omar further expressed concerns about the potential fallout of the internal disputes in Kericho, suggesting that such discord could spill over to other counties.

“The party is not keen on entertaining internal squabbles that may have wider implications," he said, emphasising the need for unity to fulfil UDA's election promises.

Governor Mutai, elected on a UDA ticket, is the first governor from the Rift Valley to face impeachment this term.

While the MCAs have been summoned, it is unclear if Mutai himself has been asked to attend the meeting. The impeachment motion, led by Sigowet ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony, has already gained the support of 37 out of 47 MCAs.

Mutai faces accusations including gross violations of the Constitution, misuse of public funds, and failure to comply with the Public Finance Management Act.

In response, he has publicly called for reconciliation and apologised for any mistakes, citing his family obligations.

The Governor will be allowed to defend himself during the public hearing, supported by a legal team to counter the claims that have put his administration under scrutiny.

Last week, County Assembly Speaker Patrick Mutai encouraged the Governor to seek the support of the MCAs and resolve the matter amicably before the impeachment debate begins.
