South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir tasks new army chief with sweeping military reforms
President Salva Kiir outlined a clear roadmap for military transformation, calling for the elimination of so-called "ghost names" from the SSPDF payroll - a long-standing issue that has drained public resources.
South Sudan's President Salva Kiir Mayardit has directed the newly appointed Chief of Defence Forces, General Dau Aturjong Nyuol, to implement urgent reforms aimed at transforming the South Sudan People's Defence Forces (SSPDF) into a more professional, modern, and accountable military institution.
Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony at State House on Wednesday, President Kiir underscored the pressing need to clean up the military's payroll and improve the welfare of soldiers across all ranks.

"This is a position of great responsibility, and I trust in your ability to serve with loyalty, discipline, and vision," Kiir said, urging Gen Dau to act swiftly and decisively.
The appointment follows the abrupt dismissal of Gen Paul Nang Majok, who had held the post for just seven months.
No reason was provided for his removal, which was announced via state radio earlier in the week.

He also emphasised the need for reliable food and fuel supplies, greater discipline within the ranks, and efforts to unify the SSPDF as a constitutional, people-serving force.
The president further highlighted the importance of enhancing South Sudan's regional and international military cooperation, noting that stronger external partnerships would reinforce internal reforms.
General Dau, in his first remarks as army chief, pledged to lead with integrity, uphold the army's constitutional role, and protect national sovereignty.
He promised to focus on discipline, professionalism, and the restoration of public trust in the armed forces.
