Communications Authority introduces new guidelines for child online protection

These new guidelines, which are part of CA's broader initiative to regulate Kenya's expanding digital landscape, aim to provide a safer online environment for children while aligning with national consumer protection laws.
The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has launched new guidelines aimed at enhancing online safety for children in response to growing concerns over the risks young internet users face.
These new guidelines, which are part of CA's broader initiative to regulate Kenya's expanding digital landscape, aim to provide a safer online environment for children while aligning with national consumer protection laws.
The Authority manages the country's numbering and frequency spectrum resources, administers the Universal Service Fund (USF), and works to protect the interests of ICT users, including vulnerable groups such as children.
CA emphasised the importance of protecting vulnerable consumers, particularly children, ensuring they have a safer internet experience in Kenya.
“Pursuant to Section 23 of the Kenya Information and Communications Act 1998 and Regulation 4,9 and 21 of the Kenya Information and Communications (Consumer Protection), Regulations 2010, the Authority is charged with protecting consumer of communication services and facilitating the development and implementation of appropriate operational and technical measures to safeguard consumers,” stated the CA in a notice.
In line with this mandate, the CA has developed "Industry Guidelines for Child Online Protection and Safety in Kenya." These guidelines, which aim to address online safety for children, are available on the CA’s official website.
The Authority has also invited the public to submit comments or seek clarification regarding the guidelines through the provided contact details.
