Jaramogi Oginga Odinga remembered: Thousands gather for 30th anniversary

Today marked the 30th anniversary of the passing of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, the first Vice President of Kenya and a key figure in the country's struggle for independence and multiparty democracy. Thousands gathered in Kisumu for a series of events honoring his legacy, including a memorial service at ACK St. Stephens Cathedral and a public lecture at the Ofafa Memorial Hall.

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of his passing, a series of activities, including public lectures and cultural events, were organized by his family led by Azimio leader Raila Odinga in Kisumu. Notable speakers at the event included, but were not limited to, Prof. David Throup, retired Catholic archbishop Zacchaeus Okoth, among other dignitaries.

Leaders present were Azimio leader Raila Odinga, Jaramogi's son and a current Opposition leader, Governor Anyang' Nyong'o, Senator Oburu Odinga, former First Lady Margaret Kenyatta, Mombasa Governor Abduswamad Nassir, CS Moses Kuria, Prof Michael Chege, Mzee Gitu Kahengeri, Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi, Senator Edwin Sifuna, among others. Political parties, civil society organizations, and ordinary Kenyans also joined in paying their respects.

Tributes poured in from across the country, highlighting Jaramogi's unwavering commitment to equality, human rights, and social justice. His role in the fight for independence, the establishment of multiparty democracy, and the pursuit of electoral justice were remembered with gratitude. Quotes like "Jaramogi's indomitable spirit will forever inspire younger generations in Kenya and across Africa" and "Jaramogi Oginga Odinga: Let my people go" echoed through the commemorations.

Ida Odinga, Raila Odinga's wife, shared a touching tribute, calling him "my greatest teacher" and "a real father." Raila Odinga spoke of his father as a source of inspiration and guidance.

Life and Times of Jaramogi

Born in 1911 in Bondo, Nyanza Province, Jaramogi became one of the leading leaders of African political organizations that played a pivotal role in securing Kenya's freedom from colonial rule and shaping the country's multiparty politics.

Jaramogi's journey began with a father's dream and limited resources, which led him to be the sole beneficiary of education in his family.

Armed with a diploma in education from Makerere University College in 1939, Jaramogi's early career saw him teaching mathematics and later managing the Maseno Veterinary School.

His foray into the business world with the founding of the Luo Thrift and Trading Corporation marked the beginning of a multifaceted career.

Entry into Politics

Entering the political arena in 1946, Jaramogi, along with his two friends, Fanuel Odede and Richard Arina, formed the Luo Union and registered it as a welfare group. He used it as a platform to get into national politics, and his influence is felt to date.

In a country sometimes divided by political and tribal lines, the Jaramogi Odinga commemoration brought people together from all walks of life and served as a reminder of shared history, common values, and the collective responsibility to carry forward Jaramogi's vision for a just and equitable Kenya.
