Somalia rolls out new e-Visa system to ease travel, boost security

Isxaaq Hassan Taakow, Director of the Department of Foreigners and Entry Permits, said the system has built-in checks to ensure smooth operation.
Somalia has introduced an electronic visa system aimed at simplifying travel, enhancing security, and modernising immigration processes.
The Somali Immigration and Citizenship Agency announced that the Electronic Visa and Travel Authorisation System (E-Visa/ETAS) will go live on September 1, 2025, through a dedicated online portal.

Under the new system, travellers will be required to apply for entry online before arriving in Somalia.
The platform allows applications from anywhere in the world and is designed to reduce delays, streamline approvals, and improve overall efficiency.
Isxaaq Hassan Taakow, Director of the Department of Foreigners and Entry Permits, said the system has built-in checks to ensure smooth operation.
“This is a modern solution built to serve travellers while protecting national interests,” he said, noting that a specialised team has been trained to operate the system securely.
Director General Mustafa Sheikh Ali Dhuxulow described the initiative as a major step in Somalia’s digital transformation.
“It demonstrates Somalia’s commitment to integration with global systems. It also supports economic growth and safeguards sensitive data,” he added.
Certain travellers will not be affected by the new policy. These include holders of multiple-entry visas, diplomatic and UNLP passport holders, residency permit holders, and citizens of countries with visa-free arrangements with Somalia.
Internal Security Minister Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartaag highlighted the financial benefits of the system, saying, “All visa fees will go directly to government accounts, helping to strengthen our financial institutions.”
The rollout of the e-Visa is part of broader efforts to attract international trade, investment, and tourism. It comes after Somalia’s admission to the East African Community (EAC), which allows free movement of goods and people among member states.
Despite ongoing security threats from Al-Shabaab, officials say the system reflects Somalia’s determination to emerge as a regional economic hub while improving border management and service delivery.
